Born from a passion of stone
Nestled in the heart of Cairns, South Pacific Stone (SPS) stands as a beacon for the stone industry in North Queensland, overcoming the longstanding challenges of geographic isolation from major suppliers in Brisbane and beyond. For decades, designers, builders, and homeowners in Cairns and the Far North were limited to selecting benchtops and surfaces based on mere photos or small samples, hindering truly informed decisions on colors, textures, and quality. The alternative—a lengthy trip to the Gold Coast to browse warehouse slabs—was often reserved for high-end clients, leaving many without access to the full spectrum of options. SPS was born from a passion to change this, transforming how the region experiences stone selection.
Our People
The Story Behind SPS and Its Master Stonemason
At the helm is Trevor Hastie, owner and manager, a seasoned stonemason with over 35 years of hands-on experience in the industry. From his early days, Trevor recognized the core frustration for consumers and designers: the inability to see, touch, and feel the real slabs.
His lifelong vision was to establish a local warehouse—a true “Gallery of Stone”—where designers, cabinet makers, builders, and the general public could immerse themselves in full-scale displays, making confident choices based on the actual materials.
In 2016, inspired by Trevor’s guidance, a business associate launched SPS as a distribution centre and showcase for premium stone products.
By 2017, Trevor acquired the budding enterprise, propelling it from a modest 20 slabs per month to a robust average of 160 slabs, fuelling the building and design sectors across the region.
Today, SPS proudly partners with leading suppliers including YDL Stone, Quantum Quartz, and Lithostone. These collaborations emphasize safe, high-quality materials considering Australia’s evolving industry standards, such as the nationwide ban on high-silica engineered stone implemented in July 2024 to protect against health risks like silicosis. SPS focuses on zero-silica engineered stone alternatives, porcelain, granite, and marble slabs—ensuring durability, aesthetics, and safety without compromise. YDL Stone, for instance, specializes in crystalline silica-free engineered stone, porcelain, and natural varieties, sourced to bring visionary designs to life. Quantum Quartz offers resilient, zero-silica surfaces ideal for modern homes, while Lithostone provides a curated collection of de-silicate quartz surfaces, prioritizing family safety and environmental care— a partnership SPS celebrated in mid-2025. With a keen eye for excellence, Trevor personally travels to Brazil to hand-select premium natural stone slabs, catering not only to North Queensland but also to southeastern markets.
